A root canal treatment is required when the inside of a tooth becomes infected.
The infection affects the soft tissue or dental pulp and this needs to be removed to restore your mouth to its optimum health.
Every tooth has a root which makes up a complex root canal system. Where a tooth has become vulnerable – perhaps due to decay, a dislodged filling or another reason – the inside of the tooth can become infected.
If left untreated, this can lead to discolouration of the tooth and ultimately to the loss of a tooth. We will perform a root canal treatment to remove the infection and clean the interior of the tooth.
At The Walden Dental Clinic, we have been treating patients requiring root canal procedures for many years and we keep up to date with all the latest in endodontic treatment to make this process as easy and comfortable as possible.
A root canal treatment is performed using local anaesthetic and your surrounding teeth are protected with a rubber dam while you undergo the therapy. The procedure is then carried out by opening the top of your tooth so the dentist can access the infected site with files.
Once the infection is cleared out, the canal and tooth will be cleaned with a special disinfectant and filled.
You may require a crown following root canal treatment to protect and strengthen the weakened tooth. Your dentist will ensure you have all the information you need to look after your teeth following the process.
